A ball screw is a mechanical linear actuator that efficiently (low friction) translates rotational motion to linear motion. Ball bearings mounted within a nut rotate around a threaded shaft providing a helical raceway which acts as a precision screw. As well as being able to handle high thrust loads, they can do so with minimum friction. They are made to closer tolerances than a traditional lead (ACME or Trapezoidal) screw and are therefore ideally suited for use in situations where high precision is demanded.
